Harman's office welcomes new senior staffer

Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) last month named Sarah Rosen communications director.

Rosen is used to handling reporters for Democrats in the California delegation. A former assistant producer for NBC’s “Dateline,” Rosen most recently served as press secretary for Rep. Sam Farr (D-Calif.).

“Sarah will bring valuable insights into the worlds of print and broadcast media,” Harman said.

Also in Harman’s office, David Flanders, the office’s former legislative director, is being promoted. He will become her senior legislative counsel.

Rep. Turner’s two hires announced

A pair of new directors is have joined the staff of Rep. Michael Turner (R-Ohio).

Andy Bloom, a graduate of Marquette University, brings experience in foreign and domestic media markets to his new post as communications director for Turner.
His new district director is Michael Gaynor, who graduated from the University of Dayton with degrees in political science and criminal justice.

Turner said Bloom and Gaynor are great additions.

“They bring maturity and a wide variety of experience to the office, and I look forward to working closely with them as we transition into the second half of the 108th Congress,” he said.

Md. GOP gets ex-McHugh aide

The Maryland GOP welcomed aboard Deborah Martinez, a former deputy press secretary for Rep. John McHugh (R-N.Y.), to be its communications director.

Martinez, a Texas native, brings journalism experience to her post she acquired while reporting for the Albany, N.Y., Times Union and the Corpus Christi Caller-Times in Texas.

Martinez said she is excited about her new opportunity. “Maryland Republicans are at a critical turning point and steadily gaining steam,” she said. Allard aide heads for Energy Dept.

Doug Flanders, the legislative director for Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.), is leaving the job he has held since November 2002.

Flanders, who joined Allard’s staff in 1993, when Allard was serving in the House of Representatives, is heading to the Department of Energy to serve as senior policy adviser in the office of the assistant secretary for environmental management.

“Doug has been an important member of my staff for more than a decade, and I wish him the very best in his new position at the Department of Energy,” Allard said.
