Election 2010: Rage, not race

By Brent Budowsky - 09/22/09 04:27 PM ET

Across the nation, there is a sense that average Americans are being hurt by powerful forces that prosper at their expense, in an economy that is unfair, with institutional, financial and political power aligned against them.

This feeling is shared by Tea Party demonstrators, jobless workers and small-business owners who find that banks won’t lend them money while their credit card interest rates rise to punishing levels, workers who lose their health insurance and young people who will be forced to pay back mountains of debt piled high by the gluttony of their elders.

The great fault line in American politics today is not Democratic versus Republican, left versus right or black versus white. It is between the core political and financial power centers and the great silent majority of Americans who want to work hard, play fair, build a better life for their families and be treated fairly by government and business alike.

There is racism in America. There are political leaders who fail to speak out against the politics of hate.

And yet: America has elected our first black president, who is still the most popular figure in national politics. Our first lady has popularity ratings over 70 percent, the envy of elected officials.
What is amazing and unreported by a media that treats our politics like a freak show is the low level of bigotry among young people who are the future of the nation.

As Christmas approaches, there will be stories of humongous Wall Street bonuses alongside stories of unemployment rising above 10 percent and foreclosures remaining at record levels. There will be stories of speculation on Wall Street alongside stories of credit card rates still rising as banks rush to beat the effective date of the new credit card law.

It is not “Merry Christmas” for workers worried about losing their jobs or benefits. It is not “Happy New Year” for those receiving pink slips while others receive giant bonuses.

This is not about race. It is about the reaction when Americans perceive that the few enjoy the prosperity while the many endure the pain.

Americans ask: Where did all this bailout money go? How do we repay these deficits? What did I do to deserve this?

Americans increasingly feel powerless as lobbyists dominate Washington and the cost of the bailouts reaches somewhere between $5 trillion and $23 trillion. Nobody tells Main Street exactly how the money was spent or how it helps the people who paid for it. People believe, often correctly, that they are being screwed.

The most powerful institution in America is the Federal Reserve Board. It bears major responsibility for creating the crisis, deserves credit for action that prevented a second Depression and shares responsibility with the president and Congress for not enacting reforms of abuses that caused the collapse.

Yet the Fed acts largely in secret, without even the audit required of government and public companies, as Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) notes.

Americans watch CEOs make millions of dollars while they outsource jobs to low-wage nations.

So-called green shoots lead to rising stock prices not so much because companies expand business, but because they cut costs, increase layoffs and reduce benefits.
Americans sense something is wrong when the cost of blood and treasure rises in Afghanistan while our corrupt government ally in Kabul steals money and votes.

There is deep concern about the uncertain dangers of enormous deficits, debt, spending and ballooning monetary policy involving government, business and speculators, while the benefits are not apparent to our people.

There is concern about America’s status as world leader when our debt is increasingly owned by foreign nations, our jobs are exported along with our products and our fate is becoming determined by forces beyond our control.

All of these concerns are legitimate. None of them involves racism. The 2010 election will be decided by who gives voice to these legitimate concerns and offers solutions that voters believe will make their lives better.

One major issue that supports the fact that many citizens have a legitimate reason to be angry is that they feel they are not heard. There has been this growth in the idea that the politicians simply do no need to listen to their constituents. We see polls taken where bailouts are frowned upon but they pass. We see polls taken where health care is not as important as jobs or the economy, yet for some reason it is the adminstration's number one priority. We see polls where the general public wants out of the middle east, yet we expand our forces. It seems that this facist colored idealogy has spread roots in the United States. I swear if we took a poll of the top congressional leaders and some of the adminstration they would say they simply know what is best for us because apparently we don't. A Republic (which we are SUPPOSED to be) is rule according to certain agreements (law, constitution) that can protect the individual from the masses. Think individual liberties and freedoms.A Democracy is rule by the many even despite the individual. A true democracy may or may not contain any individual freedoms and liberties. An all powerful Federal govt. and unpowerful states and cities can help create this.A totalitarian state is rule by the few despite the many. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to see where we are going and just how far down that path we have already come.BY bgodley on 09/23/2009 at 00:18
Of course it's NOT about race. At least not for whites…for blacks, yeah it's about race. And everybody knows this too…with the exception of paranoid blacks and older white liberals who see everything through the prism of race. Crying "racism" is the last refuge of a Liberal scoundrel, and everyone knows it except the Liberals.BY JohnR on 09/23/2009 at 09:39
I don't see why passing health care reform is so big now. We should be concentrating on creating an environment where the private sector can grow jobs. when ever Obama or Biden talk about jobs they are creating it is GOVERNMENT JOBS that we all pay for. Complete with benefits, retirement, etc.. They are crippling the private sector. They make the business leaders not want to expand as they (businessmen) do not know what new taxes or regulations will be slammed upon them next. We need an open revolt in 2010 to let them all know on both sides that we've had it!!!BY danceswithtrees on 09/23/2009 at 09:50
If the leading Democrats listen to you they won't hear much. The real problems lie in the fact that Washington insiders think they can solve everything and look down their noses at those who point out the destruction of programs created by Washington that cost too much and are not efficient. In the wake of massive Medicare fraud and a Cash for Clunker program that cost more then the alleged benefits, the Democratic leadership is determined to create a health care system so they can give away health care to illegal aliens. Obama lied about his and continues to lie about it. The American public isn't as stupid as Brent thinks nor are they as dumb as the Democratic leadership believes. In addition, the Democrats want to pass cap and trade which will drive up energy costs 30% or more. If they pass either of those bills their days running Congress are over. They know it too. That's why all the delays seeking an opportunity to put it over the top by dragging a few stupid Republicans on board. Then they can claim bipartisanship and put the blame on two Republicans. At least that appears to be their strategy. It won't work.BY Robert Rosencrans on 09/23/2009 at 09:55
There is more rage out there since any time since Vietnam, and its only going to get worse. The August townhalls were disparaged by the congressmen and the media and the immense demonstration on 9/12 in DC was barely mentioned. It is clear that few in government are prepared to listen, let alone do anything to address concerns. The expected result can only be escalation of dissent, particularly if they are arrogant enough to pass health reform with a reconciliation vote.If you look at opensecrets for who is funding your congressman you will see why they don't care what you think. Most of their money comes from large organizations with political agendas, often from out of state or district. We no longer have representative democracy. The next 12 months are going to be a very dangerous time for this country.BY FredJS on 09/23/2009 at 10:12
Our government fails the most basic and primary task duty of government, to protect this Nation and its Citizens from invasion and enforce its laws. Our Government, past present, Republican Democrat, have allowed the invasion of 20 to 30 million criminals and uneducated peons which is the largest invasion of any Nation, at any time, by any means in direct violation of Article IV Section IV of our Constitution. This refusal to abide by our Constitution or enforce our Immigration Laws should be classified as Treason of the most foul kind, as grounds for impeachment trials for Treason! Not only have they allowed the invasion, they force American tax payers to pay Billions on Billions of dollars to provide Welfare, Prison cells, Educate the invaders numerous children, and free medical care, at the same time the invading horde break numerous laws and massive document fraud, are destroying our schools, hospitals, communities, culture and standard of living while Robbing, Raping, Killing Assaulting American Citizens at an rate the terrorist can only dream about.Recent statements in Mexico from both President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary something needs to be done. "Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers, and civilians," Hillary whined. But no mention, whines, concern or care that their refusal to stop the Massive Invasion of Illegal Aliens pouring across our borders or enforce our immigration laws that causes an estimated 25 Americans deaths per day and 10,s of thousands victims of Assault, Robberies, Rapes, Identify thief, and other assorted crimes committed by the invading horde of Illegal Aliens from Mexico on American citizens each year! It is a telling indictment shows their Empathy Compassion of our Politicians their priorities are not for the American citizens when they express more concern over Mexicans deaths mostly connected to the Drug trade, than the murders, havoc crimes of Illegal Aliens against American Citizens! The Democrats view the invading horde of Criminals and Uneducated third world rejects as Undocumented Welfare Democrats the Republicans as Undocumented Slave labor for their Pay Masters in the Chamber of Commerce Businesses! Most of our Politicians in Wash. DC are wading knee deep in innocent American blood and suffering because they put Self Interest ahead of the interest of American Citizens the future of this Nation! The Citizens of this Nation have not sacrificed with blood, sweat tears for over 200 years obeyed the Laws of the land, paid the taxes, and fought the wars built this Nation to see Corrupt politicians turn this Nation into the United States of Mexico without a shot being fired, to serve their demented, nefarious goals and lust for power!BY Black Saint on 09/23/2009 at 10:15
Meantime, with 15 million Americans without jobs, the invasion continues, no Liberal Politician will address the 500 pound gorilla in the room, and millions of invading, plundering, welfare loving, prolific breeding, Illegal Aliens taking millions of jobs that should be American jobs and 100,s billions of dollars in social services that should be for American citizens! One cannot be political correct and admit that Illegal Aliens are an large part of the problems in this Nation. Their negative impact extends to every area from Sub-par loans defaults, Underground economy, Massive document fraud, Lower standard of living, Crime, Overflowing prisons , Bankrupted hospitals, Failing schools, Property Taxes, Insurance costs, Environment, Culture, Welfare costs, Welfare fraud, SS fraud, Voter fraud, Disrespect for our laws country, our Constitution against invasion and even Balance of payments occurring from oil and other imports to support the 20 to 30 million illegal aliens in this country! One has to only look at Calif. which is basically mostly an Spanish speaking, Bankrupt state that cannot afford to provide Welfare, Schooling, Medical, Prison cells etc. for millions of MS-13 Gang bangers, Drug dealers, Rapist and other assorted Criminals and uneducated, Prolific breeding, third world rejects from Mexico! In a very few years it will be impossible to see where Mexico ends and Calif. begins as both will be an third world cesspool!Failur e to secure our borders and reward the Invading horde for their invasion and their relatives in an never ending chain with American Citizenship is nothing less than committing National Suicide will assure our future is an over populated Spanish speaking third world Nation that is an Cesspool of Corruption, Crime, Poverty and Misery modeled on Mexico!BY Black Saint on 09/23/2009 at 10:17

Here is a great point. Rage will decide 2010, and the rage is growing exponentially with every new massive spending bill, and usurpation into free market capitalism.. Read: the independent press is on life support…at…http://cooperscopy.blogspot.com/BY cooperscopy on 09/23/2009 at 10:30
Well said. Not a single poll in America agrees with Obama's priority of HC reform. They never have. It's always been "It's the economy, stupid."NBC/WSJ confirmed that again today.Even more so, the NBC/WSJ poll said that quite a few in the nation no longer believe that Obama possesses the correct goals and policies to help the economy improve.Rasmussen has a poll that says the nation is even angrier now than they were under Bush. And the nation is ANGRY at the policies in Washington. No one said the HC system is perfect, but we've lost 6.4 million jobs.Washington is way off base with their priorities. Get the nation working again, THEN we'll debate about whether you should be tearing down a house to fix a leak in the roof.Until then, "It's the economy, stupid."BY No One Important on 09/23/2009 at 10:39
