How Dems win in 2010

By Brent Budowsky - 10/05/09 05:03 PM ET

Democrats should fight for the public option that a majority of Americans support. Democrats should fight to end credit card rip-offs by banks receiving taxpayer welfare while screwing those who pay for it. Democrats should fight to repeal the antitrust exemption for insurers that legalizes price-fixing by insurers dumping huge premium increases on suffering consumers during a jobs emergency.

I am going rogue. Democrats can win the 2010 elections if they remember why they were elected in 2006 and 2008. They could lose big if they don’t.

President Barack Obama’s support for the public option has been weak at best, but behind the scenes there is a major effort to pass it. If the president fights for it, he wins with majority public support.

House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) is holding major hearings Thursday for the bill he introduced with Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) to end credit card abuses by moving the effective date of the credit card law to this year.

If Frank and Maloney fight for this bill with the president’s support, they win. They would be applauded by voters holding some 700 million credit cards who are angry at being abused by banks that announce gigantic bonuses, made possible by gigantic bailouts, paid for by them.

Democrats could lose real or effective control of the House in 2010. If they do, the Obama program is bye-bye, kaput, and farewell. The Obama years would be a modest interlude that began with profound promise but ended with business as usual in Washington that fomented the same backlash against Democrats that defeated Republicans.

Don’t believe pundits who are brilliant at predicting yesterday’s news. They were often wrong about 2006 and 2008. They live in a Stockholm Syndrome of insiderism. Democrats can still win in 2010.
Frank Rich nailed it Sunday in The New York Times. Democrats were not elected to glorify Democratic insiders dining at plush restaurants and reaping payola selling their soul and their party for things they never believed in, doling out cash to Democratic members to entice them to vote for things they never believed in, either.

I am going rogue because I believe Democrats can win if they fight like hell for things they believe in, which most Americans want, and will lose by accepting the Gilded Age abuses, which most Americans despise.

Democrats can win if they stop being corrupted by cash and bullied by lies paid for by special interests. Democrats will lose if they remain cowed into fear by those who shout at town meetings, yell at joint sessions, rant on cable television, slander on talk radio, bring guns to greet elected officials, take surveys about violence against presidents, cheer when America does not win the Olympics and filibuster to preserve, protect and defend the despised status quo.

The president should fight for the public option the majority of Americans support. Democrats should stand with the huge majority of Americans to end credit card rip-offs that punish consumers and small businesses that create the jobs our nation desperately needs. Democrats should stand against the price-fixing and premium-gouging that plague the health of heartland America.

If Democrats have the courage of their convictions and campaign promises, they can win in 2010.

Any time the phrases "Frank Rich" and "nailed it" adjoin each other, you not only question the author's credibility but his sanity.BY Warren on 10/06/2009 at 09:11

The polls clearly show: "the public option the majority of Americans support".. right.BY diex on 10/06/2009 at 09:26
Yes, most Americans want the public option despite a bunch of loud mouths in August railing against it while begging for their single payer system, Medicare, be left untouched. Obama had hoped to change the tone of the debate in Washington, but it takes two to tango and the Republicans just can't dance. They stand on the sidelines and make fun of the doers. Bulletin for some of you people who haven't heard yet - the GOP is a minority party for now - bipartisanship means you get to input, but you have control of nothing. Your leaders are talk show hosts and as they become more popular to a small number of non-readers, your party continues to lose voters.BY JT on 10/06/2009 at 09:37
What's so ironic about this article is that it belies that facts that democrats are the ones who caused the worldwide economic depression/recession. they cause the 20% unemployment in the US. they forced bankers to lend to their irresponsible voters home mortgages that they never repaid. my friends that is why we are here today. that is why barrakk was rebuked in copenhagen. barrakk only talks america down around the world. barrakk and the democrats put innocent americans in this mess and they will pay in 09, 10, and 12 and there after. oh, did I mention that I'll get drunk and dance in the streets.BY Tabitha Frickfrocker on 10/06/2009 at 09:38
What color is the sky in your world?? Where is the support for the public option you claim?? Sure why not, if you left leaning cool aid drinkers believe that, it explains why we are where we are. Dont listen to us unwashed peons, we dont know what we want, better to just ram it down our throat since they know better…Why does moving to Mexico seem so appealing???????BY sick and tired on 10/06/2009 at 09:41
Your bsasic Leftish premise is very much in error. Current polling shows a majority AGAINST passage of this poorly-designed mess.BY John D. Froelich on 10/06/2009 at 09:52
One has to question your tenuous grip on reality.BY Clif on 10/06/2009 at 10:15
An interesting article in that it shows how divorced from reality most leftists are. The most amusing concept is your delusion that you actually represent the majority beliefs. Time and again it has been proven that the US is a center-right country. Until you can accept that your hopes and goals do NOT reflect the average American, your party will find itself quickly out of power (not a bad thing IMHO). Just remember since the Republican party was founded in 1854, the great majority of US Presidents have been from that party. I doubt that trend is going to change. At the rate Obama is going he's a one-termer. Just like the President he most emulates - Jimmy Carter.BY Just Dave on 10/06/2009 at 10:26
"Democrats should fight for the public option that a majority of Americans support."Send that back to the bs factory please. Clearly, the polls state an overwhleming majority of Americans do not support a public option.BY Harrison_St on 10/06/2009 at 10:41
The economy has not improved? Have you looked in your 401k lately? Mine is up about 50%. Last year we were looking at another Great Depression. Today we are exiting a recession. I know Republicans cheer everytime the Dow goes down or unemployment goes up the way they cheer when America loses an olympic bid but most Americans are pulling for better times ahead.BY Mike McNary on 10/06/2009 at 10:42
Community Organizer obama is diametrically opposed to american citizens having freedom. you can see this as he try's to get us hooked on his government run healthcare. He's not investing in businesses and the free market to employee citizens…he wants us beholden to the federal government. obama has never held a private sector job in his life…his mother was a welfare recipient and obama admits smoking crack. he is a clear and present danger to the american way of life.BY Cathy Bouswa on 10/06/2009 at 10:49
My God, you really believe the majority WANT a public option or mandate (which is what your "change" will really get us)!!! I know of not one single person, friend, foe or family, who wants it.BY Hollie on 10/06/2009 at 10:51
How do the Dems win in November 2010?1. Pigs begin flying in October 2010.2. 63% of persons who are more concerned about losing their current health care than passing a public option stay home.3. ACORN is still in business.4. Pelosi and Reid go into hiding and the public forgets that they are the face of the democratic party.BY DonNYCEsq on 10/06/2009 at 10:59
Sad little man… Maybe you are one of the rare "noble" liberals who has true compassion for the poor and the down-trodden, and doesn't just want to control them (and their votes). I'm not sure where you are hearing the hilarious idea that the majority of Americans want a public option for healthcare, but I think pretty much ALL Americans want credit card gouging to stop, and to be able to shop competitive premium prices from insurance companies - which can happen WITHOUT totally destroying and re-building the present system - would be another win for America. The winners in 2010 shouldn't be the Dems OR Republicans - I hope it will be the American people who will vote in representatives who will listen to US and work for US - regardless of party. The parties have left the American people - not the other way around.BY Cindy on 10/06/2009 at 11:00
If the voters wanted the Public option the congress would just put it in there. They have the votes. Why don't they just do it. It's because they heard us in August plaily say WE DO NOT WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO HAVE ANY MORE INVOLVEMENT WITH OR HEALTH CARE.They will be roundly defeated in 2010 should they fail to listen to the VOTERS.BY danceswithtrees on 10/06/2009 at 11:00
If you believe your little tirade about "Hope Change" was the reason Obama won the election, then I hope you go on believing that. Obama won because he ran against Bush and Bush lite. And the country had enough of Bush. Obama no longer has Bush to blame for the direction of the country - it is all on him now and with that in mind, his liberal nature will destroy him in this center-right country.Take a small moment and look at who got him into the WH. Not the die hard left - they would vote for the old time "yellow dog" if it wore the Dem label. Not the Blacks - the Black vote went 94% to Kerry and what did it got that Bufoon - butkus. Obama won because of the independent vote and the failure fo the right to energize.Well you can make fun all you want of the tea parties and such but that is the beginning of a right wing surge - they are already energized! And just check your polls - the Independents are bailing out of Obama's "Hope Change" by the droves.Yep, keep on keeping on and watch the 2010 midterms make 1994 look like a cake walk - there could be a 100 vote swing and then Obama is sunk for 2012. And I am looking forward to both of those days!BY SShiell on 10/06/2009 at 11:02
If the comments on this post are any indication then the majority of the people want a public option with the same passion the author would like to be tar'd and feather'd…A fate which may befall some Dem pols in the event the legislation passes.BY Kevin Cutts on 10/06/2009 at 11:22
Democrats LOSE wars? What 'history' book were you taught from, Rush's Real Revised American History? Let's see… WWI Woodrow Wilson (democrat), WWII FDR/Truman (democrats). Korea Ike (calling that a 'win'?). Vietnam Nixon (surely you don't think he WON it…). In fact the only war in living memory that was in any way arguably 'won' by a Republican was Desert Storm, and what did they do? Fumbled at the end.BY Chandler on 10/06/2009 at 11:42
Holy cow Brent…you must be living under a rock or be paid off by the Obama machine to write this one…how about the DC TeaParty…you guys said 60,000 were there…garbage…have you been following the polls except the one MoveOn.org put out?…better go back to journalism school to learn how to report fact correctly without bias…BY boozy on 10/06/2009 at 11:42
