Surrendering sovereignty

By Dick Morris - 09/29/09 04:51 PM ET

While all eyes were on the rantings of Ahmadinejad at the United Nations, the United States — under President Barack Obama — was surrendering its economic sovereignty at the G-20 summit. The result of this conclave, which France’s President Nicolas Sarkozy hailed as “revolutionary,” was that all the nations agreed to coordinate their economic policies and programs and to submit them to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for comment and approval. While the G-20 nations and the IMF are, for now, only going to use “moral suasion” on those nations found not to be in compliance, talk of sanctions looms on the horizon.

While the specific policies to which the U.S. committed itself (reducing the deficit and strengthening regulatory oversight of financial institutions) are laudable in themselves, the process and the precedent are frightening. We are to subject our most basic national economic policies to the review of a group of nations that includes autocratic Russia, China and Saudi Arabia. Even though our GDP is three times bigger than the second largest economy (Japan) and equal to that of 13 of the G-20 nations combined, we are to sit politely by with our one vote and submit to the global consensus. Europe has five votes (U.K., France, Germany, Italy and the EU) while we have but one.

And the process will be administered by the IMF, whose counsel to less developed nations over the past two decades has consistently called for social pain and economic austerity. The IMF’s misguided policies have been responsible for more revolutions than Marx, Engels and Lenin combined. Its bureaucrats’ arrogance is legendary and their search for appropriate punishments to fit the crime of spending too much on the poor smacks of colonialism and imperialism. They are our new overseers.

This combination of the IMF and the G-20 will not only work to structure national economic policies but to limit executive compensation at financial institutions. The watchful, wise leaders of such nations as Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia — among others — will monitor Wall Street to assure themselves that its compensation is not out of line. One particularly looks forward to the views of the Saudi monarchy on this question of excessive personal enrichment.

Perhaps as part of his public spasm of apology, President Obama also strove, successfully, to increase the voting strength of the debtor nations on the IMF from the current 43 percent to 48 percent. This is the economic equivalent of giving deadbeat debtors more votes on their bank’s governing board of directors.

Thus, the world’s most successful economy — ours — which is the only one that has produced reliable economic growth for three decades and has lifted real personal incomes almost every year, is going to subject itself to the burden of justifying its own economic policies in front of a global community of 20 nations, some of which do not even embrace free-market economies in the first place. Indeed, it is only through access to our markets that nations have been able to escape poverty. Japan, Germany, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, China and India have sequentially trod this path into prosperity.

Obviously, we live in a global economy. But the United States is 24 percent of it. We are entitled to more than one-twentieth of a voice, and it is the world that should be following our policies — not the other way around.

Much of the damage of the Obama administration can be undone at the next election. But such grants of sovereignty to autocratic, backward, bureaucratic and even communist nations will be hard to undo. The world is recovering from its leftist obsession — e.g., the Merkel victory in Germany. But by the time the voters discover how phony, failed and fraudulent these policies are, we may have given it all away already. Irrevocably.

Please talk about this on Hannity Mr. Morris. Please this guy is highjacking our country and for Americans who did not vote for him and those that did and regret it we really do not want to go down this path. Obama aka Peter keating needs to realize he has no leg to stand on at all.BY Steve  on 09/30/2009 at 16:55
"Surrendering Reason" is a more apt title for this.BY Scott on 10/01/2009 at 01:58
We have elected a man with absolutely no qualifying expereince, with a decided leftist background—as attested to not only by President Obama's own words but by the group of unvetted leftists advisors who surround him. It always amazes me that people argue as though there is somebody there of real substance to argue with." In short we have foolishly elected an extraordinarily weak President "who blows with the wind," who hardly knows what he is doing (the real reason for all the czars who are there to prop him up at every turn?). Should one be surprised that every foreign government, friend and foe alike, is rushing forward to take advantage of this bewildered man at every turn? What DOES one say to an "empty suit"? Like in the classic movie, "A Bridge Too Far," we have disastrously carried Affirmative Action too far in applying it to the Presidency! At least, if we were determined to ignore real competition for the office if favor of PC or Affirmative Action, we had some better qualified and substantial Blacks in Powell, Rice, etc. Far from bringing any kind of racial peace to America, we have a President who has surrounded himself with supporters determined to play the race card at every turn, starting with his campaign and continuing unabatted into his Presidency, exacerbating the race problem in America and unconscionably killing many years of progress and goodwill between the various races and ethnic groups in America for openly partisan purposes. The President himself revealed his own deep-seated anti-White prejudice in the affair with the New Haven police. And lest we forget, as an AF student at Princeton, Michelle Obama majored in Black Studies, "code" (a word which the anti-White supporters of Obama use at every turn) for a course of studies blaming Whites for every problem in Black society, ignoring as always the black empires in Africa who started it all by greedily selling their brothers and sisters into foreign slavery. The only hope is to elect more Republicans to Congress in 2010, and plan actively to undo as much of the damage as possible in the future.BY ctr on 10/01/2009 at 17:14
I don't understand the relationship here. Why would we be committed to any such agency like the IMF? Is there a treaty in place? Wouldn't Congress have had to approve such an agreement, which tends to usurp their power, otherwise? We can tell them to pound sand, can we not?BY Mark on 10/01/2009 at 23:39

You are surely aware that this Administration (and the previous 3) have all been moving us to globalization using the United Nations Sustainable Development Program/Agenda 21 Protocols as their blueprint. This should be on the lips of every American, yet so few seem to know about it. You have done a great job at revealing this or that component as they arise, but dissecting 'content' without fully understanding the 'context' from which is all flows, becomes a mind-numbing process. The noble jargon of "clean green" is being used in the most insidious of manners to take control of this country. The Liberals have found their perfect vehicle upon which they can usher in their Global Union. No reasonable person can deny the validity of wanting clean air, or clean water…can they? The perfect scam! It is not as if clean air is bad…it is how these issues are being used for a total government take-over of our lives. Messiah Obama is here to usher in the age of social equity, cultural equity, economic equity, biological equity and judicial equity as defined by Agenda 21. To realize his global vision, the Messiah deems that America must first die, so it can be re-born.BY Savant Noir on 10/02/2009 at 20:19
This is a well written, as well as factual article that should be sent to Every American in the United States!! What will happen to each of us, "IF" the Obama Administration is allowed to subvert and give away our Country's Sovereignty? Is Congress allowing this to just happen without any oversight?BY FRANK COLLATT on 10/05/2009 at 09:29
Can Barrack Hussein Obama be impeached for this??? Can this be reversed when BO is out of office??? Why isn't this the MAIN topic on FOX News???BY Chris on 10/08/2009 at 18:44
What we see is a coup de main by the Democratics. It does not help that the Republicans are still lead by the likes of McCain, who will not fight. We hope that the country will return a Republican majority to the House and Senate next year. Still this will not be enough. The Republican Establishment after all opened the gates for the vandals. While conservatives muted their criticism because of the need to support the war, "compassionate conservativism" drove up the deficit and set the war on a back burner in a futile attempt to hold onto power. Let us not forget that it was inattention to the economy that led to the crash last September. That and nothing else put this bunch into the White House.BY John Schuh on 10/11/2009 at 10:03
