The Jews and the Democrats

By Mark Mellman - 10/07/09 03:17 PM ET

Maybe it comes from long hours sitting in synagogue during the High Holydays; or perhaps it’s the death of distinguished neoconservative Irving Kristol or the appearance of a book by his fellow traveler Norman Podhoretz, Why Are Jews Liberals?— but the Jewish vote, though small, is attracting considerable attention.
Jews have proven to be stalwart Democratic loyalists. Only three demographic groups gave margins of 50 points or more to John Kerry: African-Americans, gays and Jews. Three groups also gave margins of 50 points or better to Barack Obama: blacks, Jews and those who identify with no religion.

That support remains steadfast. During September, Gallup found 64 percent of American Jews approved of the president’s performance, compared to 52 percent of adults generally and 44 percent of non-Hispanic whites. Only African-Americans and Latinos offered higher levels of approval.

Jews’ loyalty extends to the Democratic Party more broadly. Two different polls, utilizing different methodologies — Gallup’s and another from the American Jewish Committee — show Jews identifying with Democrats by nearly 40-point margins.

Podhoretz admits this reality, but laments that it should be, arguing that Jews fail to properly apprehend their interests. American Jews, he maintains, are too wealthy to be economically liberal, the Bible too socially conservative for Jews to be culturally progressive and Republicans too solidly supportive of Israel for Jews to find any other political home.

While underestimating Jewish poverty, Podhoretz, perhaps unable to fully liberate himself from early dalliances with Marxist determinism, maintains that the right-thinking rich could not endorse liberal economic policies. Kennedy’s, Kerry’s, Rockefeller’s and Buffet’s, not to mention the 52 percent of Americans earning over $200,000 a year who voted for Obama, all give the lie to the underlying assumption.

While the import of biblical social imperatives is subject to debate, the succor American Jews find in a tolerant, pluralistic, secular society is not, nor is the hostility of the right to that vision.

Support for Israel is a critical element of Jews’ voting behavior. An experiment we embedded in a survey for the National Jewish Democratic Council provides the most telling evidence. For half of the sample we pitted a Republican candidate "Jones" who had a "strong pro-Israel record" and a variety of typical Republican issue positions against a Democratic opponent "Smith," who also had a “strong pro-Israel record” along with typical Democratic positions on the same issues. The other half of the sample was given identical portraits of “Jones” and "Smith" except that, for the second group, the Democrat lacked the pro-Israel record.

Comparing the vote in the two halves of the sample reveals the substantial difference support for Israel makes to Jewish voters.

The pro-Israel Democrat won by a 45-point margin, while the Democrat who was identical, except on Israel, eked out only a three-point win. Support for Israel alone created a massive 42-point swing in the margin, clear evidence of the centrality of Israel to Jewish voters.

Exactly what constitutes a “pro-Israel” candidate is uncertain, but the new American Jewish Committee poll hints at some indicia. Ninety-four percent of Jews believe the Palestinians must recognize Israel as a Jewish state; two-thirds would endorse Israeli military action to prevent Iran from going nuclear; nearly six in 10 oppose a compromise that left Jerusalem divided or outside Israeli sovereignty. While 60 percent would dismantle at least some Israeli settlements in exchange for peace, only 8 percent would dismantle them all. As J Street’s poll makes clear, 75 percent supported Israel’s military action in Gaza, while almost the entire community supports an active role for the U.S. in pursuing peace.

With 76 percent labeling the president pro-Israel, Democrats appeal to Jews’ economic and cultural instincts, as well as to their pro-Israel commitments.

Unfortunately, your statistics indicate that even when a Republican with strong support for Israel runs against a Democrat lacking a pro-Israel record (you do not indicate exactly how you framed the question) 53% of the Jews still voted for the Democrat.Thank Gd for the support of the Christian right.BY Abraham Irwin on 10/08/2009 at 10:40
So why is the Obama admimistration obviously scaring we Jewish Democrat voters. From his Cairo speech linking the State of Israel to the Shoa and not the 3000 year history to the Settlement issue. Gaza was turned over to the PA and it became a launching base. Israel Stop the Settlements NOW-PA please start being nice. For a 2 State solution, Israel has to have a form of a real state to deal with. Not another launching pad. Think before you speak!BY KARL KAPLAN on 10/08/2009 at 11:36
There is one element left out in this discussion. Yes,jews do tend to be richer, but we also have a strong tendency to be socially moderate which is completely at odds with the republican party. The other comment id make is that jews place a high priority on intelligence. Lets see who the republicans run for higher office. George W. Bush and Sarah Palin. Jews maybe wont vote for intellectually inferior candidates.BY ed on 10/08/2009 at 12:34
too many of us were taken in by obambi's purported support for israel and his jemployment of ewish american advisers: emanuel/axelrod. obambi's cairo speech was an outrageous slur that ignored jewish history and our connection to israel except as an aftermath to the shoah: 'next year in jerusalem; our holy city; the eternal city, etc. obambi surrounded himself with all too many people who were anti semitic- yet alone anti israel: khalidi; farrakhan; rice; powers; brezhinski; and, the worst president in modern history, jimmy carter although I suspect obambi will eclipse carter in perfidy. I tell my friends: I told you so. finally, I am hearing from former obambi supporters who are expressing buyers remorse. mellman should ask israeli's if they think obambi is pro israel. he'll get an earful. it is also silly to cite the J Street organization as supporters of israel's actions in gaza when, in fact, they bemoaned the consequences to the gazans who were killed after the idf exercised, probably, more restraint than our troops have demonstrated and I say that NOT as a critique of our brave men and women serving in iraq and afghanistan.life is about defining terms. mellman does not adequately define what is 'pro israel'. to a leftist being pro israel is not the same thing as being pro israel to an israeli or a conservative. define what you mean by: pro israel than do your polling.BY cd katz on 10/08/2009 at 13:02
Not a 42% shift, only a 21% shift. The Demo went down 21% and the Goper got these 21%. At a 45% margin, the Demo won by 72.5% - 27.5%, so with a shift of 21%, it shows that less than 1/3 of the Demos gave a hoot about Israel. The "D" next to a candidates name is more important than pro-Israel credentials. How troubling and sad!!BY Bill Smith on 10/08/2009 at 13:46
The survey purportedly shows that Jews would be less likely to support a Democrat over a Republican if the Democrat lacked a pro-Israel record. The weakness in the hypothetical match-ups, and the reason the survey is useless, is that a Democrat merely has to utter the mantra "I support Israel" to be deemed by Jewish Democrats as "pro-Israel." Obama, for example, is a disaster for Israel, has put her on his chopping block, and indeed is the worst President Israel has faced at least since Carter, and possibly ever. (See, e.g., http://rabbidov.com/twostate.htm) Yet, by merely uttering the mantra, Jewish Democrats quote that as justification for supporting him. Tragic.BY Rabbi Dov Fischer on 10/08/2009 at 14:03
when Israel is forced to take military action on Iran they will see how little support they have among thier fellow Democrats. a recent poll shows when asked the question " do you support the policy of USA using sanctions WITH MILITARY OPTION LAST RESORT" do you support that policy. 40% said no. 60% yes, that 40% is not Republican. that is 80% of those who vote Dem if you go with the 50/50 blue red divide. American Jew will learn the hard way. American Jewish liberals are much more hawkish then the rest of liberals who are really intellectual descendants of 1948 Red candidate Henry Wallace then real liberal harry truman.BY gil corby on 10/12/2009 at 10:20
