Social Security cap is the answer on budget

By Pat G. Wright - 04/05/11 07:32 PM ET

It is frustrating to see how Congress works so hard to take from the middle class and the poor, while every effort is made to make sure that the wealthy survives. My question has always been, why is Social Security a sacred cow? Why not lift the cap off of Social Security as we did with Medicare and let everyone pay on earned income? Even if the rate is lowered from 6.20 percent to 5 percent there would be tons of money to be made to pay for healthcare and so many needed programs, and also ensure that the elderly and the poor do not lose their benefits.

Someone, please do the calculation — balancing the budget on the backs of the poor is not the answer. Infrastructure is falling apart, we are falling below even Third world countries in education, and all Congress sees is to cut the budget and not increase taxes. You cannot cut spending and leave income untouched.
