Assess Puerto Rico’s merit and resolve its status issue

By Nilda R. Pérez - 05/05/10 07:27 PM ET

As an American citizen residing in Puerto Rico, I wish to congratulate all the members of the House of Representatives that supported Puerto Rico Democracy Act 2010, HR 2499 that seeks to provide Puerto Rico with an opportunity to resolve its status problem. I must specially thank Rep. José Serrano (D-N.Y.) who supported Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi (D-Puerto Rico) throughout.

Going in, we knew it was going to be an ordeal. There were many, both in Puerto Rico and in Washington, D.C., who tried to block this bill. To all who care to promote democracy and economic development everywhere: Let’s start in the United States and its territories. Puerto Rico can no longer progress under the current political system and, that is why we need to change it. This would not only benefit the many American citizens living on the island but also the U.S. government.

Now, it is up to the Senate. Again, there are doomsayers that predict that you will ignore this democratic effort and historic event and just let it die. But after having us under the wing for over a hundred years, do you not think it’s time to help Puerto Rico by evaluating its merits and finally passing this bill?
