No harm from cap-and-trade? You lie!

By Don L. Blankenship - 10/20/09 06:35 PM ET

“You lie!”

Those two words made big news last month when Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) yelled them at President Barack Obama’s healthcare speech on the floor of the House of Representatives. Congress demanded an apology. Others applauded the words as refreshing and long overdue.

Whether the words “you lie” applied properly to the health insurance debate, I don’t know. But the opinion of Rep. Wilson was very clear to everyone. Unlike so many politicians, business leaders and spin masters his comments weren’t clouded by what I call “sophistikitis,” the practice of being so politically correct and overly sophisticated as to leave open for interpretation what you really mean.

As chairman and CEO of Massey Energy, the nation’s fourth-largest coal company, I aim to be as clear as Rep. Wilson relative to the theory of global warming.

Speaking plainly and clearly is a rarity in politics and business — particularly among CEOs of publicly traded companies. Many times I’ve sat in meetings with executives who admit privately they doubt the certainty of the science behind global warming claims. And they acknowledge that global warming legislation will have a devastating effect on their companies in the form of lost jobs and lower output.

The reality, which many Americans may not realize, is that CEOs, presidents and shareholders of publicly traded companies fear that if they are clear in expressing their opinions in opposition to legislation like cap-and-trade, the government of the United States of America will exercise “extra scrutiny” in its regulation of their companies. Certainly, domestic energy companies like Massey can’t withstand much extra scrutiny or retaliatory regulation from the government.

However, the truth is the truth and lies are lies. Neither politicians nor government nor the media can change that. In Spain, an economics professor calculates that green jobs schemes have destroyed more than 110,000 jobs in that country, or 2.2 jobs destroyed for every one created. The CEO of the world’s largest renewable energy company, Eon, is warning the EU that further cuts to CO2 emissions will only raise the cost of energy, putting the region at a competitive disadvantage and driving production overseas.

The truth about global warming alarmists in the business community who say Congress must pass laws immediately to stop the planet from warming is that they are driven more by pursuit of profit than pursuit of science and real atmospheric temperatures. These companies lie for profit and at the expense of American families’ budgets, American’s homeland security, and the quality of the world’s air and water.

You see, they know cap-and-trade will hurt the American economy. That it will cost American jobs. That it will increase our dependency on foreign energy. And yes, they know that it will increase global pollution by moving production to unregulated countries like China. They also know the world is cooling. They know that cap-and-trade won’t lower the earth’s temperature. To those saying otherwise I say simply, “You lie.”

Blankenship is chairman and CEO of Massey Energy Co.

We are cooling and will continue to do so my hope is we don't cool down to far.BY steve1953 on 10/21/2009 at 04:45
Don, I say YOU LIE! The science is in. Give us a list of the scientists that back your lie. You need to stop making things up and begin to take responsibility for the damage you are doing in Appalachia. You have placed entire communities in jeopardy, including the children at Marsh Fork Elementary with your mountaintop removal dump mining operations. You attempt to justify this destructive mining method with lies about jobs. This mining method does not create jobs and you know that. It does create a lot of wealth for you and your investors. You are poisoning our air. You are poisoning our water. All for your addiction to coal at all cost. You are blinded by greed to the point of spreading shameful and pathetic lies. You keep popping up in publications all across America. I suppose you're buying yourself space just as you have bought politicians and judges and draft dodging has been rock stars. Your shameful display of wrapping yourself in our American flag on Labor Day and calling for the overthrow of American Democracy made it evident that you are a danger to America, and the world.BY bo webb on 10/21/2009 at 07:01
The most recent national climate assessment — a collaboration among academic and government climate scientists — disagrees with Blankenship's myopic view on climate science: http://www.usgcrp.gov/usgcrp/Library/nationalassessment/overviewfindings.htm. I will take their word over his regarding the science. Blankenship has shown time and again that he would rather attack the science that says something is a problem than attack the policy which is the real target of his ire.Aaron HuertasUnion of Concerned ScientistsBY Aaron Huertas on 10/21/2009 at 09:48
Thank you for your words. I challenge you and the other CEOs to STAND UP for your companies, our jobs and America. The people will stand behind you, because we also know that Global Warming is the biggest bottle of snake oil!BY JBA on 10/21/2009 at 10:55
@Bo Webb…what are your alternative then to coal? You, and other Greenies rant on, but provide no solutions, or stand in the way of any alternatives. Would you consent to nuclear energy? That is by far the cleanest source of energy out there and also the cheapest. Of course you won't. You've been suckerd by the lies that Green Energy will somehow meet all of our energy needs. If Green Energy is so great, the private sector would have grabbed it and run with it, but as it stands now, Green Energy needs HUGE govt subsidies to even exisit on life support — money that this govt does not have. No thanks…I'll put my money on proven energy sources like coal, natural gas and petrolium.BY JBA on 10/21/2009 at 10:59
Way to go Don! Thanks for saying it out loud and not being afraid of these thugs that shout down non-believers and shut the door to real debate. The world has a serious shortage of real men these days thanks to Libs emasculating them in the name of fairness and "Evil white men" theory.BY Lyman420 on 10/21/2009 at 15:29
Don lies- Don who puts little kids at risk at Marsh Fork Elementary School with a 2.8 billion gallon sludge dam aimed at them- Don who got caught vacationing with a Judge that was hearing on of his case- that one is famous. Don who poisoned families wells with sludge in Rawl, WV and Prenter, WV . He is blasting peoples homes in Pettry Bottom , WV - poisoning their air. This man is an evil greedy coal baron.BY hollergirl on 10/21/2009 at 18:14
Yes, the world is warming but what is unclear and open for debate is the main source of this warming [solar flares?] and what is the extent of human contributions. We've had global warming long before the rampant use of carbon based emissions. We've had little ice ages as a reaction to this warming. We've seen civilizations collapse due to climate change. When these solar flares abate how much will the Earth cool? While we can glean information from past events we don't have anywhere near the scale of human contributions to this problem until now. It is clear that we can't sustain this type of energy consumption for one simple reason: we have finite supplies of fossil fuels. We will run out of this "dirty" energy at some time. I would love to burn our nuclear stockpile as an alternative to fossil fuels and divert our bombs into furnaces - but even that won't solve our energy problem. Cap and trade is a scheme that allows the wealthy to pollute and buy off a more efficient producer. It actually adds to greenhouse gases while we pretend to protect the environment. IF the "private sector" [I use this term very loosely considering how government caters to the wealthy] doesn't find alternative energy "profitable" enough to develop then they will be the first to be screwed when the supplies run out. Maybe we can get rid of these parasites forever [wishful thinking on my part]. Whoever develops alternative energy first will prevail in the future economy - unless the wealthy use government to steal it from them.BY JT Barrie on 10/21/2009 at 22:01
"As chairman and CEO of Massey Energy, the nation’s fourth-largest coal company"Understandable, as the business of digging prehistoric carbon from the ground (to be set on fire, with the proceeds sent into the atmosphere) is certainly in trouble if we are to decide to actually do something about climate change. I'm sure that the gas lighting companies wrote such "disastrous" consequences when electricity came to town, as did the horse carriage companies when automobiles came about. There really is no alternative to fossil fuels as far as getting the concentrated energy which drives our "shop-til-ya-drop" consumer society. Fossil fuels are finite and the rate at which we consume them has dangerous consequences for the environment which supports all life. Alternatives exist which will allow us to have a happy, comfortable, peaceful world, but only if we are willing to begin NOW making serious changes (with the help of the fossil fuels that exist today, not waiting until they are gone) along with accepting the fact that no one will be getting rich off of the next "energy revolution". The laws of thermodynamics have never lied to us. Fossil fuels are a one-time blessing and human societies will either adapt to life with less consumption or annihilate themselves in resource wars.BY cjohnson on 10/22/2009 at 17:39
Snake oI Scheme, ponzi scheme, these various cap and trade laws are the worst of the progressive movement scams. Don Blankenship said on Labor day the global warming rate was 11%. Two nights later on the WeatherChannel, The National Weather Service said the same thing. I trust Don Blankenship I wish i trusted my gomernment, but I dont.BY Michael Baisden on 10/22/2009 at 20:13
