Celebrate Oceans Week 2006 at the Reef
From offshore drilling to sustainable seafood, 50 Ways to Save the Ocean says there is something everyone can do to protect our seas.
In recognition of World Ocean Day, author David Helvarg will be at the Reef restaurant, in D.C.’s Adams Morgan neighborhood, at 2446 18th St. N.W. The event is scheduled for Thursday, June 8, from 7 to 10 p.m.
The Reef’s ocean-friendly aquarium is featured in 50 Ways to Save the Ocean. The fish, algae and corals in the tanks are all captive-raised. Nothing has been collected from the wild. Just as owner Brian Harrison says he wouldn’t serve non-sustainable fish in his restaurant, he doesn’t believe in keeping display fish unless they fit his ethic of marine protection.
Stetson’s: A place to find Dems, a Pub Quiz game
Stetson’s Famous Bar and Grill (1610 U St. N.W.) has the unpretentious-neighborhood-bar business on lock. The well-known Democratic hangout is still rough around the edges and proud of it.
Every day, Stetson’s offers specials good enough to please the Bush twins and the Dems who frequent it.
On Wednesdays it’s burgers, cheese fries, 25-cent wings and $2.50 rail drinks.
Margaritaville is easy to find on Mondays with two-for-one margaritas made in-house. All-day happy hour on Sundays might inspire bar-goers to sing with Led Zeppelin, Frank Sinatra or Tim McGraw on the jukebox.
Guests can test their skills in a game of Pub Quiz on Tuesday nights for a $75 booze payoff.
Indulge in Hawk ’n’ Dove’s midnight breakfast
The Hawk ’n’ Dove (329 Pennsylvania Ave. S.E.) is the quintessential Capitol Hill bar, but it’s also a good place to have breakfast at midnight.
Bar-goers don’t have to wait for morning to enjoy eggs and bacon if they choose Hawk ’n’ Dove’s famous late-night breakfast, starting at 9 p.m.
The bar also serves sandwiches and burgers until 1 a.m. weeknights and 2 a.m. weekends.
Sam Adams and Nationals fans rejoice because before and after Nats games May 3 through May 28 pitchers of Samuel Adams Lager and Summer Ale are just $10. Three dollars is enough to buy a bottle of Sam Light.
