Pentagon wants plan to close US commissaries

The Pentagon has requested a plan for potentially closing all U.S. commissary stores, the Military Times reports.

Defense officials reportedly asked the Defense Commissary Agency to develop the plan to close the commissaries as part of its work on the 2015 Defense budget.

The proposed plan, which comes as the Pentagon grapples with budget cuts under sequestration, would likely face resistance from lawmakers and service groups, should the Pentagon decide to pursue it.

Closing all U.S. commissaries would shutter roughly three-quarters of the military stores, as there are 178 commissaries in the United States and 70 overseas.
