Two dead at Naval Station Norfolk

Two people were shot and killed at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia on Monday night, according to the Navy.

A sailor was shot and security on the base killed a civilian suspect, the Associated Press reported. They were both male.

The shooting took place at 11:20 p.m. Monday and an investigation is under way. Security responded to the incident and there were no other reported injuries, according to the Navy.

The naval base, the largest in the world, was briefly put on lockdown.

They Navy offered no further details in a short press release Tuesday morning.

Civilians must have a pass or be escorted to get onto the base, according to the AP.

The shooting comes a week after the Pentagon released a report finding that the 2013 shooting at the Washington Navy Yard could have been prevented. The report found there were missed opportunities to report the shooter's erratic behavior in the months before the shooting. The incident ultimately left 12 people dead last September.
