He was a Navy SEAL for seven years and served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, Quigley said.
At his private security firm, Doherty worked in Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel and Kenya, as well as Libya, according to the Globe. He had returned to Libya on Sept. 5, Quigley said.
Quigley said her family was notified about 5 p.m. Wednesday. The State Department has not yet named him as a victim in the attack.
