Paxton is taking over a vacancy created after several moves were announced last week. He is nominated to replace Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, who was picked to become the new U.S. commander of ISAF in Afghanistan.

Dunford is replacing Gen. John Allen as ISAF commander, as Allen was nominated as commander of U.S. European Command and NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe.

All of the nominations require Senate confirmation, but none is expected to be controversial.
