Marine killed in rocket attack in Iraq identified

The U.S. service member killed at a base in northern Iraq Saturday has been identified as Staff Sgt. Louis F. Cardin of Temecula, Calif. 

The 27-year-old was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 26th MEU out of Camp Lejeune, N.C., the Pentagon said in a statement. 

The death occurred when a base at Makhumur came under rocket attack.

The base is home to American troops who are advising the Iraqi military. 

The detachment from the 26th MEU had been deployed to Iraq for the support of Iraqi security force and coalition ground operations, according to the Pentagon.
