President Obama said Sunday that National Security Agency (NSA) Director Adm. Mike Rogers is “a patriot” — but would not to comment on reports that top national security figures have asked him to fire Rogers.

"Adm. Rogers is a terrific patriot and has served this country well in a number of positions," Obama told reporters during a press conference at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Peru.

On Saturday, The Washington Post reported that Defense Secretary Ash Carter and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper asked Obama last month to fire Rogers.

According to the report, Carter questioned Rogers’s competency, while Clapper wishes to see a civilian head the NSA.

"I generally don't comment on personnel matters here,” the president added Sunday. “I can say generally that we’ve spent a lot of time over the last several years looking at how we can organize our cyber efforts to keep pace with how rapidly the environment is changing."
