“Once controversy arose about the amount he was being
paid, he decided it was much more important to keep the focus on the students,
on the school and on the teaching, and not have it be about the money," he said.
CUNY had announced in April that Petraeus would teach a
class as a visiting professor at CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College. But the appointment
was criticized after Gawker obtained
documents through a Freedom of Information Act request that revealed the
university agreed to pay Petraeus $200,000.
Petraeus resigned as CIA director last year after an FBI investigation revealed an extra-marital affair.
