U.S. troops are now patrolling the Turkish-Syrian border, the Military Times reported Friday.

The patrols come after Turkey earlier this week conducted airstrikes against Kurdish forces aiding the U.S. in the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq & Syria (ISIS).

The Defense Department would not confirm to the Times whether the troop presence was meant to deter fighting between Turkish forces and the Kurdish militant group the People's Protection Unit.

Turkey conducted airstrikes in both northern Syria and northern Iraq this week, targeting Kurdish militias.

“We have forces in the entirety of northern Syria, the border is among the area where they operate,” Pentagon spokesman Navy Capt. Jeff Davis said, according to the Times.

Turkey considers the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) a terrorist organization and sees the Kurdish forces in Syria as connected to the PKK.
