Indian PM to miss UN climate summit in New York

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not be attending the United Nations climate summit in New York next month.

The summit is meant to build momentum for the climate change talks next year in Paris, which are expected to yield a global pact on greenhouse gas reductions. The summit is on Sept. 23.

Modi will be in New York later that week to deliver his first address to the U.N. General Assembly, the Economic Times reports.

He will then fly to Washington, D.C., to meet with President Obama.

Obama is scheduled to attend the New York climate summit, joining the long list of leaders that are expected to be there. Chinese President Xi Jinping will also attend.

The U.S. and China are crucial leaders in negotiations to form a global climate treaty. The two country's are the largest emitters of greenhouse gases in the world.
