It was one of several tweets aimed at Inhofe, including one public message to actor Matthew Modine and another person stating, “We need to have Inhofe retire to a solar-powered gay bar.”

Inhofe is a strong ally of oil-and-gas producers and a major recipient of campaign donations from that sector.

A spokesman for Inhofe strongly criticized the tweets from Baldwin as well as tweets directed at the senator from environmentalist Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who earlier in March said on the social media site that Inhofe is “big oil’s top call girl.”

Spokesman Matt Dempsey contrasted them to Inhofe’s recent interview with MSNBC host Rachel Maddow.

“These kind of outrageous statements made recently on Twitter by Robert Kennedy Jr. and Alec Baldwin stand in stark contrast to the civil debate Sen. Inhofe had with Rachel Maddow last week,” Dempsey said in an email Monday.

“In truth, the far left and Hollywood elites have lost on their pet cause of global warming. The only way to get attention these days is to make outlandish and irresponsible comments on Twitter,” Dempsey added.

Kennedy had attacked Inhofe over Twitter earlier in March amid the controversy surrounding Rush Limbaugh’s attack on Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke, whom Limbaugh called a “slut” and a “prostitute” due to her advocacy for access to contraception.

Baldwin tweeted Saturday, “We gotta get rid of Inhofe in 2014. He’ll be 79,” and, in an exchange with another Twitter user about the Limbaugh comments, noted that “Fluke isn’t a slut and Inhofe is an oil whore.”
