Bingaman will focus on efforts to “extend and update” state-based green electricity generation programs.
Nearly 30 states have mandates, often called “renewable portfolio standards,” that require power companies to gradually expand the amount of electricity provided from renewable sources.
“During his appointment as a distinguished fellow from April 2013 to April 2014, Senator Bingaman will assess the status of current RPS programs and try to determine what policies might be adopted to update and improve those programs,” the announcement states.
Winning enactment of a national renewable or low-carbon power mandate was an unrealized goal of Bingaman’s during his Senate career.
