Congressional tax writers urge IRS to not collect lapsed airline taxes

“Therefore, we encourage you to utilize all your discretion and authority to extend relief for passengers and airlines with respect to ticket taxes that were not paid or collected because of the lapse and provide the industry a three-day period of time to restart processes to collect the taxes,” the four legislators wrote to IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman in a letter dated Thursday.

The Senate on Friday morning passed an extension of FAA funding, ending a two-week impasse that had left thousands of workers on the sidelines. With the partial shutdown, taxes on airline fares and plane fuel, among other things, expired as well.
