Most recently, Burwell has led The Wal-Mart Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the retail giant, and previously served as a deputy budget director in the Clinton administration.

Following her stint for former President Clinton, she spent several years in leadership roles at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, where she focused on ending world poverty.

Next week's hearings come right around the scheduled April 10 release of the White House's long-delayed 2014 budget. It was initially due Feb. 4.

House and Senate Republicans have pummeled Obama for the nearly two-month delay.

The White House has argued that uncertainty surrounding the "fiscal cliff" debate hampered the process of producing a budget.

The House and Senate have each approved their respective budgets.
