House Dem pushes for permanent education tax credit

The AOTC was extended for five years as part of the recent “fiscal cliff” deal, after first being enacted in the 2009 stimulus package. The credit gives families as much as a $2,500 credit per college student for tuition, books and other education expenses.

Democrats fought hard to extend the education tax credit – as well as expansions to the Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax provisions – in the 2012 debate over extending the tax cuts first enacted under President George W. Bush.

Many Republicans said those expansions were meant to be temporary and should have expired.
