Treasury lawyer to become chief of staff

Mark Patterson — who served as chief of staff to Tim Geithner, President Obama’s first Treasury secretary — is expected to leave the department around Memorial Day.

Now Treasury’s deputy general counsel, Weideman has also been an associate counsel to Obama and an associate at Williams and Connolly.

Treasury is likely to remain a key player in discussions between the administration and Congress over tax-and-spending issues, especially given Lew’s long experience with budget matters and with another potential showdown over the debt ceiling looming.

The department also has a role in the implementation of the Dodd-Frank overhaul of financial regulations, and will be keeping an eye on the European economy.
