Gallup: People in U.S. want government to focus on jobs

The government has now been shut down for two weeks, and top Senate leaders are making progress on a deal to raise the debt limit and reopen the government. The Treasury has said it the country will exhaust its borrowing authority on Thursday.

According to Gallup, one in 10 people want the government to cut spending to help the economy, and another 7 percent want fairer or lower taxes.

Republicans have said that they would like to attack entitlement spending and overhaul the tax code in budget negotiations with President Obama and Democrats.

But many in the GOP also believe that regulations hurt job creation, and believe the government should get out of the way of the private sector.
