Public comments are now being accepted on the 2010 advisory report on dietary guidelines for Americans, the result of two years of work by 13 independent experts. The report and public comments will be translated by the federal government into science-based dietary guidelines that serve as the basis for federal nutrition education and promotion programs, as well as food assistance.
"The Advisory Report will provide [the U.S. Agriculture and Health and Human Services departments] with a strong foundation for preparing the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which will be released at the end of this year," USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack and HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a joint statement on Tuesday. "We look forward to receiving comments from the public that will help USDA and HHS translate these recommendations into meaningful policies and messages for the American people."
