Former Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.) has joined the Heritage Foundation as a visiting distinguished fellow focusing on healthcare reform initiatives.
The eight-term congressman was a champion of conservative healthcare principles as a member of the Energy and Commerce health subpanel. Shadegg has chaired both the Republican Study Committee and, more recently, the House Republican Policy Committee.
Last Congress, he introduced bills that would have allowed the sale of health insurance across state lines and given individuals and families refundable tax credits to buy insurance on the individual market.
"John Shadegg understands that free-market competition is the best way to lower health coverage costs and expand insurance options for consumers," Center for Health Policy Studies Director Nina Owcharenko said in a statement. "He also understands how to communicate and advance policy ideas, and can bring practical knowledge to bear in the ongoing health care debate."
