Planned Parenthood celebrates O-Care birth-control mandate

The head of Planned Parenthood celebrated the two-year anniversary of the ObamaCare birth-control mandate on Friday.

Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood, wished the mandate a happy birthday and touted it had helped millions of women after going into effect.

“Happy Birthday to the #ACA birth control benefit! Went into effect 2 years ago today—since then it's helped 30 million women (& counting!),” she tweeted.

The mandate requires for-profit businesses to cover free birth control for their workers and has been one of the most controversial parts of the Affordable Care Act.

The craft giant Hobby Lobby took the Obama administration to the Supreme Court over the provision, arguing that mandating private employers to offer certain kinds of birth control as part of employee health insurance plans violated their religious rights. The high court sided with the crafts store chain in a 5-4 decision.

Democrats have jumped on the issue as an infringement on abortion rights and are using the court ruling as a rallying cry to get women to vote for their party’s candidates this fall.

A recent Democratic poll found a majority of women between the ages of 18 and 55 said they intend to vote for candidates who said they oppose the recent ruling.
