Wyden’s op-ed, published on the Huffington Post, argues that Medicare is on an unsustainable fiscal path and that the Ryan-Wyden plan is one option to reform it. Wyden said some Democrats have mischaracterized the plan in their criticism and also said Republicans shouldn’t use the outline for political cover.
“Mitt Romney, for example, claims to have helped write Wyden-Ryan even though I have never spoken to him about Medicare reform and have yet to hear him declare that there should always be a role for traditional government-run Medicare,” Wyden wrote.
Romney has endorsed a Medicare plan similar to Ryan-Wyden. Both proposals would let seniors choose to enroll in the existing Medicare program or to receive a government subsidy that would help pay for private insurance.
