Obama seeks $30 million to research gun violence

The CDC researched gun violence until the 1990s, when the National Rifle Association persuaded its allies in Congress to block funding for such research. The language was somewhat ambiguous, though, and Obama has directed the CDC to resume its work — and now has requested $10 million to foot the bill.

Obama also sought $130 million for mental-health programs for young people.

Advocates have made an aggressive push for more mental-health funding in addition to — or perhaps in place of — gun control.
