Health insurers revamp lobby team

AHIP has already spent nearly $4.6 million to lobby the federal government so far this year and more than $9.3 million in 2012, according to disclosures. In addition to its in-house staff, federal records show the group also has six lobbying firms working on its behalf.

Allen and Komendant joined AHIP in 2011 and have been serving as vice presidents in the federal affairs department.

Allen was previously a lobbyist for Vertex Pharmaceuticals and Johnson & Johnson. He also had a stint on Capitol Hill, working on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and as a health policy advisor former Rep. Mike Bilirakis (R-Fla.).

Komendant worked as the policy director for the congressional Blue Dog Coalition and in the offices of Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and former Pennsylvania Democrat Rep. Jason Altmire. He also served as a lobbyist for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).
