The study's authors said their findings could help bolster the case for new payment incentives for hospitals and other healthcare providers. ObamaCare, for example, began penalizing hospitals for quick readmissions.

"As hospitals realize savings from prevention of these complications under payment reforms, they may be more likely to invest in such strategies,” the study says.
