Consumer Reports clarifies ObamaCare website critique

In a follow-up post called “ObamaCare opponents have misrepresented Consumer Reports’ position: HealthCare.gov problems do not negate benefits of new health law,” reporter Nancy Metcalf writes:

“Pundits opposed to the new health care law and some media outlets have tried to suggest that our coverage of the troubled HealthCare.gov site means that Consumer Reports has turned against the Affordable Care Act. Not true…The best place to buy coverage on your own is through the Health Insurance Marketplace in your state. That guarantees you will get comprehensive coverage, and it's the only way you can lower the cost of your premiums and possibly even your deductibles and copayments.”

Metcalf linked to this article at The Hill as evidence the media was suggesting Consumer Reports had “turned against the Affordable Care Act.”

Earlier in the day, Metcalf wrote a blog post advising consumers on how to navigate around some of the most common issues, in which she seemed to conclude that it's not even worth attempting to use the online portal until the fixes are in.

“If all this is too much for you to absorb, follow our previous advice: Stay away from Healthcare.gov for at least another month if you can,” she wrote. “Hopefully that will be long enough for its software vendors to clean up the mess they’ve made.”



Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) press secretary Brendan Buck pounced on the report, and as of late Monday, the conservative news aggregation site Drudge Report was still running a link to a National Review story about Metcalf’s post.
