The visit to Tariq al-Sawah, who was arrested in Afghanistan in 2001, is part of President Mohammed Morsi's efforts to look after Egyptians abroad, the Foreign Ministry said, including visiting prisoners and providing them with consular services. The Morsi government has been demanding al-Sawah's release since last summer.

The delegation was briefed on “the living conditions of him [Sawah], including the current health care that he receives,” according to a ministry statement. The meeting lasted about two hours.

Al-Sawah was charged with conspiring against the United States and providing material support for terrorism in 2008. The charges were dropped last year.
