Obama administration 'very concerned' with first conviction under Russian NGO law

Golos has accepted funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development in the past and played   a key role in highlighting allegations of fraud during the 2011 parliamentary elections that led to some of the biggest protests since the fall of the Soviet Union. President Vladimir Putin kicked USAID out of the country in September, accusing it of undermining Russian sovereignty, notably with its support for election monitors and human-rights advocacy groups. 

This week's court ruling came down after Golos won a European freedom prize. Golos said it has returned the $10,000 in prize money.
