UN: Syria death toll nearing 100,000

The report comes as Assad's forces are said to be preparing an attack against Homs, a key rebel-held town. Government forces took the city of Qusayr last week.

The Obama administration has been unusually public this week about its ongoing discussions on whether to take extra steps, such as arming vetted rebel groups. 

The discussions appear to be aimed at putting pressure on the Assad regime to cease its offensive and participate constructively in a last-ditch peace talk scheduled for next month in Geneva.
