The State Department on Friday confirmed that an American citizen was killed in a stabbing attack in the West Bank this week, an act it decried as terrorism.

The victim, 21-year-old Tuvya Weisman, was reportedly an off-duty soldier in the Israel Defense Forces who was shopping with his wife and young daughter in a supermarket when two Palestinian teenagers attacked. Another person was injured in the attack.

“There is no justification for terrorism,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner said in a statement on Friday. “This horrific incident again underscores the need for all sides to reject violence, and urgently take steps to restore calm, reduce tensions, and bring an immediate end to the violence.”

“We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends, and stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance,” Toner added.

The two Arab teenagers were shot and wounded by a bystander. One of them later died from the injuries.

The killing on Thursday comes amid months of heightened tensions between Israelis and Palestinians, and frequent bouts of violence.

According to The Associated Press, 28 Israelis have been killed in the attacks since mid-September. Meanwhile, more than 160 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces, of whom 115 are believed to have been attackers.
