Commerce to hold series of innovation forums

The events will take place at the University of Massachusetts Boston on June 29, the University of Southern California in Los Angeles on July 8, the University of Michigan on July 13 and Georgia Institute of Technology on July 15. Speakers include Locke, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office director David Kappos, federal Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra, National Institute of Standards and Technology director Patrick Gallagher and the four university presidents.

Forum participants will discuss how to move an idea from the lab to the marketplace, strategies to support commercialization, regional economic development, and entrepreneurship education. Locke hosted a forum on “Catalyzing University Research for a Stronger Economy” in February in Washington, D.C.

“The Obama administration recognizes and supports the pivotal role our nation’s universities play in technology commercialization and economic development,” Chopra said. “The upcoming innovation forums are sure to advance the valuable dialogue already underway among administration officials, university leaders, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders as we work together to implement the president’s innovation strategy.”
