Analyst: Obama proposal a win for wireless infrastructure firms

President Obama's proposal to devote new federal funding to mobile broadband is a win for wireless infrastructure companies and handset suppliers, according to an analyst.

The development is positive for Alcatel-Lucent, Telabs, Ciena, American Tower, SBA Communications and Crown Castle, according to an analyst note by Paul Gallant of MF Global. It's also positive for handset maker Motorola.

Gallant said the money directed toward the FCC's Universal Service Fund may provide new competitive risk for rural phone companies, such as Windstream, CenturyLink, Qwest, Frontier and Consolidated Communications.
