BlackBerry outage spreads to Americas

BlackBerry has struggled to keep up with smartphone offerings from Apple and Google, with the firm's U.S. market share and profits dropping sharply in recent years. But the devices remain ubiquitous in countries such as India and the United Kingdom.

The failure of a switch at RIM's data center in Slough, England, was reportedly to blame. RIM has also experienced pushback from foreign governments asking for access to their secure messaging services for law enforcement investigations.
