Weitzner departing White House for MIT

Weitzner joined the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) in 2011, stepping into the role formerly held by Tumblr Vice President Andrew McLaughlin. Weitzner has worked on various Internet policy issues during his time in the administration, such as cybersecurity and copyright protection, but is known for his work on the White House's online privacy white paper.

A spokesman for OSTP said Weitzner's last day will be Aug. 3.

Prior to the White House, Weitzer served as the associate administrator for policy at the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration and also worked on the Obama administration's transition team.

Weitzner also worked in MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and taught Internet policy at the school's electrical engineering and computer science department. The OSTP spokesman said Weitzner will return to teaching and conducting research at MIT.
