The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) conducted random searches on commuter trains in south Florida on Thursday.
West Palm Beach television station WPTV reported that TSA had conducted a "Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response Operation" on the Tri-Rail train system in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.
The agency says the surprise sweeps are intended to catch potential terrorists.
"VIPR teams work with local security and law enforcement officials to supplement existing security resources, provide deterrent presence and detection capabilities, and introduce an element of unpredictability to disrupt potential terrorist planning activities," TSA said when the program was first announced in 2007 after trains in Madrid were bombed.
