New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu: Airport needs makeover

Among the plans being considered are expanding the current airport by adding new terminals west of the current facility or constructing a new terminal near Interstate 10, which runs near the airport, the paper reported.

In a letter to the chairman of the New Orleans Aviation Board, Landrieu said it was important that New Orleans have a "world class" airport.

"The Louis Armstrong International Airport servers as a gateway to millions of tourists and business travelers each year and is a critical driver for the creation of jobs and economic development," Landrieu wrote. "[The airport] is the front door of our city, and improving our airport is integral to our success as a world-class travel destination and hub for commerce."
