Accused 'underwear bomber' trial set to begin

The man accused of attempting to blow up a Northwest Airlines plane in 2009 with a bomb hidden in his underwear will stand trial this week in Detroit.

Nigerian resident Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 24, was charged with terrorism after he allegedly tried to set off an explosive device that was hidden in his undergarments as his flight from Amsterdam prepared to land at Detroit Metro International Airport on Christmas Day 2009.

The bomb did not explode as planned, and Abdulmutallab was detained by passengers and crew aboard the plane, Northwest Flight 253, until he was arrested.

The Detroit News reported Monday that Abdulmutallab would defer to his attorney to make an opening statement when the trial begins Tuesday.
