Airline hit with first fine for tarmac delays

Recently, JetBlue and American airlines diverted several airplanes to Hartford, Conn., and held passengers on the jets for longer than seven hours. The Federal Aviation Administration said it was investigating the incident.

Under the rules adopted in 2010 by the DOT, airlines can be fined as much as $27,500 per passenger for a delay longer than three hours after an airplane is boarded and leaves its airport gate.
