According to a new study, 54 million self-driving cars will be sold in the U.S. by 2035.

USA Today reports that the study, which was conducted by IHS Automotive, finds that annual self-driving auto sales will jump from 230,000 in 2025 to 11.8 million per year in 2035.

The study predicts nearly all cars on the road in 2050 will be self-driving.

Congress has held hearings about the potential development of self-driving cars, with some expressing reservations about the technology.

“It's hard for me to fathom a car in New York City being without a driver,” Rep. Albio Sires (D-N.J.) said in a November hearing. “I mean, it's hard enough with a driver. So, you know, trying to visualize this is very difficult.”

House Transportation Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-Pa.) has called self-driving cars “the future of transportation,” however.
