Transit union pushes for passage of internet sales tax bill

The Marketplace Fairness Act of 2012 has been approved by the Senate, but the measure faces uncertain odds in the House.

Online retailers and consumer groups have argued that it is unfair for states to tax purchases from companies that often are located in other jurisdictions.

However, the ATU's "Americans for Transit" group's Executive Director Andrew Austin said on Tuesday that the Internet sales tax bill would "provide crucial revenue that would help many struggling transit agencies to crawl out of fiscal crisis and halt proposed service cuts and fund transit improvements for millions of riders."

“We call on Congress to pass this bill to help address the transit funding crisis across the country," Austin said.
