Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.): “Saving Private Ryan”
Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.): “As someone who has worked many years in and around the film business, this is a very hard call. But if I had to choose one film it would be ‘The Year of Living Dangerously,’ because of the intricacy of the plot, the rare accuracy of its depiction of Southeast Asia, the majesty of its cinematography, the beauty of Maurice Jarre’s original music, and director Peter Weir’s ability to capture a wide array of human interactions.”
Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.): “Animal House”
Rep. Lois Capps (D-Calif.): “‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington’ is a sentimental favorite, because when my late husband Walter Capps was first elected to Congress in 1996, the local newspaper headline was ‘Mr. Capps Goes to Washington.’”
Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.): “Star Wars”
Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-Calif.): “‘Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,’ starring Russell Crowe. It’s a great movie about life on the sea, leadership, ambition and battle.”
Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.): “Once” and “The Pope of Greenwich Village”
Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio): “It’s a tie between ‘Dr. Zhivago’ and ‘Gone With the Wind.’ Those are two of the best movies ever made. We [my wife and I] have our Three Dog Night cinemas. We watch movies with our two Beagles and Cocker Spaniel. Our dogs are quite the movie critics.”
Rep. Timothy Johnson (R-Ill.): “A Christmas Story”
Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.): “The one I watch more than any other is ‘Casablanca.’ The other is ‘The Searchers’ with John Wayne.” Tancredo added that he and his wife have such different tastes in movies that they’ll go to the theater together, but then part ways and see different films. “Three out of four times we go our separate ways, but a lot of times I’ve left mine for hers, which is probably some violation of House rules.”
Rep. Lacy Clay (D-Mo.): “All three [installments] of ‘The Godfather.’ My second is ‘Cool Hand Luke,’ [starring] Paul Newman.”
