Rep. Ray LaHood (R-Ill.): “Mitt Romney, bar none. His hair is dyed absolutely perfectly to show the right amount of gray and black.”
Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.): “There is only one woman running. [Laughs.] That’s my answer.”
Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Ala.): “That’s hard, asking a guy a question about that. Everyone talks about Romney as far as his youthful appearance, in contrast to Fred Thompson being a lot older and maybe having health concerns. Rudy Giuliani appears to be older and not quite in the shape that Romney is. I’d probably say Romney envisions what a presidential candidate would look like. That certainly wouldn’t be a good way for anyone to choose [his or her] vote.”
Rep. David Davis (R-Tenn.): “You know, I don’t think about those issues. I’m deeper than that. I think about substance.”
Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.): “You have to determine whether you’re using European or African standards. In order to talk about best-looking … you have to determine who determines that. It’s a very awkward question.”
Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), a presidential hopeful: “I’ll refer you to George Bernard Shaw in Saint Joan: Dressing up don’t fill empty noodle.”
Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.): “John Edwards is my choice. I don’t have an opinion about [beauty]. All of them leave a little bit to be desired. But [my choice] is John Edwards. I represent a poor district and he speaks directly to issues of poverty.”
Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.): “Chris Dodd. He’s a sage, wise man.”
Rep. Ric Keller (R-Fla.): “I guess most people would say Romney. Did you want me [to choose] a woman? How about this? Hillary, the best-looking woman, and Romney, the best-looking guy.”
Rep. Charles Gonzalez (D-Texas): “Oh, John Edwards. He’s a real good-looking Dennis Quaid. Second best-looking is Mitt Romney.”
Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.): “From a guy’s point of view? Hillary Clinton. That’s safe.” [Laughs.]
Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.), a presidential hopeful: “Are you kidding? If you went to central casting and asked for someone that looked like a presidential candidate, Mitt Romney would be at the door. He’s tall, perfect features, impeccably dressed.”
Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.): “I don’t know. Because I’m a serious heterosexual I would have to say Hillary — who else would I say?”
Rep. Mark Udall (D-Colo.): “I’m always mindful of what Jay Leno said: ‘Politics is show business for ugly people.’ ”
Rep. Mike Honda (D-Calif.): “They’re all good-looking to me. I’m going to take the Fifth.”
