A prolonged shutdown could threaten the agency’s ability to oversee the nation’s power plants and regulate the handling of radioactive waste, Keeley said.
All of the NRC’s nom–emergency co-operative efforts with other countries – including its work on a taskforce assembled in response to 2011 meltdown at Japan’s Fukushima plant – would be halted, she said.
“What is happening at the NRC should drive home the point that this shutdown is damaging the interests of all Americans and needs to be ended promptly,” Kelley said.
The NTEU represents roughly 150,000 federal workers across 31 agencies, including 2,600 at the NRC.
